Herbalism

For centuries, powerful healers and doctors have been depending in the potency in various botanicals to treat almost every kind of ailment known to man. Even today’s modern pharmaceutical companies are relying heavily on the natural healing powers derived from plants with therapeutic properties.

Herbalism History

Since ancient times, phytotherapy or the use of plants and herbs have been used for their therapeutic benefits. This is a traditional therapy, which has been practiced among different cultures and medicinal systems. The earliest healers known to men are as far back as the Paleolithic era some 600,000 years ago were already intimately studying the therapeutic properties of various plants. Medicinal systems that sprung from ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic societies methodically studied the medicinal properties of plants and made it a cornerstone to their respective healing cultures and techniques. When the Western world developed conventional medicine, much of the earlier drugs invented and mass-produced were derived from years of studying the properties and the chemical composition of plants and their medicinal uses. Today, even as chemists learned to make plant compounds using synthetic substances, a quarter of pharmaceutical drugs are still derived from plant material. Modern man’s Aspirin is derived from Willow bark, the cancer therapy drug Taxol is extracted from Pacific yew, and the heart muscle strengthener drug Digitalis has its origins from foxglove.

Benefits

Most of us tend to understand that herbal medicine continues to be a solid foundation of our contemporary healing process. Healing with herbs remain to be very popular world-wide, as 80% of our global population are finding the costs of pharmaceutical drugs prohibitive and are turning to herbal therapies as their primary source of health care. pharmaceutical companies  have more scientific data and supported studies resulting the uses and effects of their drugs. With the help of modern technology, they are supported in their efforts to market conventional medicine to those who have means to access pharmaceuticals.

There are known to be hundreds of medical herbs for a wide variety of illnesses from burns and minor bruises to more severe diseases that are known to man. There is a myriad of herbal medications associated with the treatment of chronic illness such as arthritis, migraines, menstrual cramps, depression and hypertension. Some of the modalities are accessed through herbs that can be easily grown at your home and prepared as homemade extraction, tinctures, infusions, or poultice, while others are simply procured in health stores and alternative clinics such as herbal capsules, tablets, herbal tea’s or dietary supplements. Some herbal remedies are also available as topical oils and ointments, salves or aromatherapy essences.

Uses

Not every herb has the same consistency of potency or healing abilities. Some are more capable at curing specific medical concerns and health conditions. Certain parts of the herbs are best when used in specific modes of indigestion or application to achieve the right results.

Safety

The use of herbs is best practiced with caution. Although alternative medicine is a natural way of healing it is safe for the most part, certain chemicals found in plants react differently when combined with other natural substances and chemical compounds in the human body.
